Euro 2024 is coming towards its end with the final coming up on Sunday, leaving just four teams left chasing glory.
England will be looking to go one step further than they did on home soil three years ago when they finished runners-up to Italy.
However, Gareth Southgate‘s men will face stern competition, with the Netherlands up next in the semi-finals.
From David Beckham to Wayne Rooney, England have been heavily burned by suspensions to key players during tournaments gone by, and they could be again.
England centre-back Marc Guehi was suspended for the clash against Switzerland, but the Three Lions just about managed their way through via a penalty shootout.
At Euro 2024, a player will be suspended for their team’s next match if they receive two yellow cards in two different games.
This is why Guehi was banned for England. The Crystal Palace defender was booked in the 0-0 draw with Slovenia and then again in England’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia in the last 16.
It is also why Dani Carvajal and Robin le Normand will play no part in Spain’s semi-final against France.
In addition, a player would have also been banned if they’d accumulated four yellow cards before the semi-finals, which no player managed to do, although Rodri was close on three.
UEFA wiped the card tally after the quarter-finals, meaning every player is now on zero yellow cards.
However, a red card received at any stage of the tournament results in an automatic one-match suspension.
So if someone is sent off in the semi-final, they would miss the showpiece this Sunday.
Depending on the nature of the red card, additional sanctions can be added on by UEFA if deemed necessary.
Any suspension received in the team’s final game of the competition will be carried over into their next official match.
