Whether you’re heading to Taylor Swift’s Eras tour in Europe or are just thinking about visiting some of Europe’s most iconic and popular destinations soon, it’s always best to get informed before you book your trip and finalize your plans.
Much like the rest of the world, some European countries warrant a particular heads up when it comes to tourist safety. Thankfully, the US Department of State is constantly monitoring conditions and potential safety issues in countries throughout the world and, based on recent events, it is frequently issuing updated travel alerts for Americans who are looking to leisurely get out of the country.
Navigating such travel advisories and staying up to date with their iterations, though, can be challenging. Therefore, much like we did for the Caribbean islands earlier this year, we have compiled an up-to-date guide highlighting all the active travel advisories (level 2 or higher) that the State Department has issued for European countries. This guide will be updated as more advisories are issued or adjusted.
Every travel advisory mentioned below features a different degree, which describes how potentially dangerous the country is as assessed by the department. Level 1 is the lowest degree, and it is described as “exercise normal precautions.” Level 2 warns travelers to “exercise increased precautions.” Level 3 and 4, instead, are the highest levels of these warnings, and they respectively encourage travelers to “reconsider travel” and “do not travel.”
The following European countries were excluded from the list, as they are marked with a Level 1 warning, indicating that travelers should exercise normal precautions: Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland.

These are all the European countries with active travel warnings of Level 2 or higher right now. For additional details on any of the countries below, you can click through to view the State Department’s website:
