After Poland and Slovenia, Estonia, which is a neighbouring country of Russia, wants Indian companies to set up manufacturing lines within its borders.

Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in 2022, a significant opportunity has emerged for India’s defence industry. Russia’s continuous aggression has increased tensions in European countries, raising concerns about their security. As a result, these European nations have started exploring options to procure artillery to strengthen their own militaries and support Kyiv. According to an Eurasian Times report, several European countries have expressed interest in sourcing weaponry from India as an alternative supplier.

Estonia Shows Interest in Indian Weapons

After Poland and Slovenia, Estonia, which is a neighbouring country of Russia, wants Indian companies to set up manufacturing lines within its borders. Estonia’s Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur recently said that Indian companies are keen to invest in ammunition production in the country. Notably, the statement comes at a time when India is actively increasing its defence exports.

Indian defence companies that manufacture 155 mm ammunition have showed interest in investing in Estonia’s defence sector. Along with ammunition, these Indian firms are also seeking the possibility of setting up artillery manufacturing lines. Estonia is one of the few NATO countries consistently meeting the 2 percent defence spending requirement.

Howitzers Showcased Strength In Ukraine War

In an interview with WION, the Estonian Defence Minister said that the country is not only looking for ammunition but also the production of armed vehicles and howitzers. He hoped to visit India soon to discuss these deals. Ukraine war has showcased the effectiveness of howitzers. Additionally, conflicts in the Middle East have further increased the demand for 155 mm artillery.

According to experts, modern technologies like drones play a significant role in the Ukraine war. However, the outcome of the war may ultimately depend on which side can sustain prolonged use of artillery. For years, Europe prioritised air power and guided missiles ignoring artillery. Now, recognising its importance, Europe is ramping up the production of 155 mm artillery. As per NATO estimates, Europe currently produces around 2 million shells annually.
