Helen in
Carmarthen, west Wales: Hi. Why isn’t Gareth Southgate making more
substitutions? Particularly Lewis Dunk?
Phil: Hello, Helen. I
think he has been making changes but they have not exactly been in great
circumstances, such as taking Trent Alexander-Arnold off after 54 minutes
against Denmark then replacing all three attackers at once, 15 minutes later.
Not ideal.
Southgate then felt
the need to remove Conor Gallagher for Kobbie Mainoo after 45 minutes against
Slovenia. It has all been reactive and like for like. He has not had the luxury of
making changes when the things were going well.
As for Dunk, in my
opinion I don’t recall any circumstances that have called for
his introduction.
