Real Madrid are going for glory in their opening match of the 2024-25 season, as they prepare to face off against Atalanta in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup final in Warsaw. Carlo Ancelotti will have almost his entire squad to choose from, and the latest indication is that he will start with the vast majority of players that did so for the Champions League final in June.
Luka Modric would be the beneficiary of Toni Kroos’ departure, as he is likely to start against Atalanta. Fellow veteran Dani Carvajal is nailed-on to play at right-back, and if they can lead Real Madrid to victory in Warsaw, they would achieve further European football history.
Having already achieved the most Champions League wins in history (six, tied with Kroos, Nacho Fernandez and Paco Gento), Modric and Carvajal can become the two players with the most UEFA Super Cup successes if Real Madrid defeat Atalanta, as per MD. They already hold that title alongside Kroos, Karim Benzema, Dani Alves and Paolo Maldini (four), but the pair can go out in front on their own.
Carvajal would fancy his chances of being the sole holder of that title in the coming years, with Modric expected to be playing his final season as a Real Madrid player in 2024-25. Nevertheless, they and their teammates will be targeting a strong start to the season on Wednesday, and with it, yet more silverware.
