Harry Kane believes he will be at ‘peak sharpness’ as he looks to continue his fine knockout goalscoring record for England at Euro 2024.

Captain Kane may be England’s all-time leading goalscorer but his strike in the draw with Denmark was his first in the group stage of a major finals since the 2018 World Cup.

However, he will be buoyed by his recent record once the business end of the tournament begins against Slovakia, having scored four in four at Euro 2020 as England were eventually beaten on penalties by Italy.

Kane said: “So we’ve had three games in a short space of time so I feel like not just for me, but a lot of players come into their peak sharpness at the knockout stage and that’s what I found in especially recent tournaments as well.”

Southgate ‘deepfakes’

The FA issued a statement after several AI-generated fake Gareth Southgate press conferences have gone viral.

The fake clips have received millions of views on platforms like X, TikTok and Instagram.

They include derogatory comments about players in England’s squad for Euro 2024 and also players not selected.

The FA said in a statement to the BBC: “As we do with all harmful content we will take steps to have these offensive videos removed.

“Gareth and everyone in camp are focused on Sunday’s game.”

Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo is ready for the biggest match of his career so far.

Set to start in England’s Round of 16 clash with Slovakia at Euro 2024, the 19-year-old is prepared to step up and star for his nation.

Acknowledging the magnitude of the match, he told ITV: “Do I relish it? Yes, that is what you play football for, the big occasions. You don’t win anything big unless you play in the big occasions.

Southgate dismisses boo boys

Gareth Southgate was subject to boos and a few cups thrown at him after the 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

However, he doesn’t care what the supporters think of him as long as they back his players.

Speaking to the press in his pre-match press conference, he said:

“It’s irrelevant [what fans think of me].

“The most important thing is the support for the team, and what I said the other night was to try to make sure that we get the sort of support that the team got in the stadium in the second half, simple as that.

“My job is to create the best possible environment for the players, to fight their cause at the right times, to take responsibility at the right times.

“The team need the fans so they should never underestimate what a lift it gives to the team when they are like they were in the second half against Slovenia and I’m certain, going into this knock-out phase, they’re going to be the same.”
