With just one year remaining on his deal, Alexandre Lacazette (33) had a difficult decision to make this summer. Amid interest from Saudi Arabia, the Frenchman decided to remain with his formative club as they made a return to European football. However, it now seems unlikely that he will remain at Olympique Lyonnais beyond the end of the current campaign.
Former France international Lacazette returned to Lyon on a free transfer in the summer of 2022. The return has been an undeniable success for both parties. In his first season back, he netted 31 goals in all competitions. He then scored 17 in Ligue 1 last season as OL made a miraculous rise from the relegation spots to the European places.
Lacazette then had options to leave but ultimately remained over the summer. However, with his contract expiring, it seems as though there won’t be a renewal, as he told DAZN after netting in Lyon’s 1-0 win over local rivals AS Saint-Étienne on Sunday.
“It was my first Derby at the Groupama Stadium and surely my last one too,” he told broadcasters post-match. His future, therefore, seems sealed.
