The busiest travel season in Europe might be ending, but that doesn’t mean visitors can breeze in and out just yet.
The US Department of State just updated and reissued a travel advisory for Italy. Now, travelers heading to the European country are encouraged to “exercise increased caution due to terrorism.” According to the official advisory, no specific event prompted authorities to update the travel warning. Instead, it was reissued “after periodic review” of the country’s safety.
“Terrorist attacks are possible in Italy,” reads the advisory. “Terrorists may attack with little or no warning. They may target tourist spots, transport hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of religious importance, parks, major sporting and cultural events, schools, airports, and other public areas.”
For this reason, tourists should always be aware of their surroundings, especially when visiting crowded places and popular tourist locations and attractions. The advisory also urges travelers to follow the instructions of local authorities and to monitor local media to stay up to date with the latest relevant events and information.
