The extra position for collective performance in European competitions means that things shift down one spot in the table.

As such, sixth (unless Dortmund win the Champions League) goes directly into the Europa League along with the winner of the DFB Cup.

If Leverkusen make it a domestic double in the final against Kaiserslautern then seventh-placed Hoffenheim – who downed Bayern 4-2 on the last-day of the season – will also go into the Europa League. Heidenheim – who finished eighth in their maiden Bundesliga season – would snatch a Conference League play-off spot as their reward for a remarkable campaign.

Should Bundesliga 2 side Lautern stun Leverkusen in Berlin, then the second-division team will earn the right to go into the Europa League alongside Frankfurt (or as Germany’s sole representative, if Dortmund win the Champions League).

UEFA Europa Conference League

As mentioned, Heidenheim, the team from Baden-Württemberg whose town has a population of just 50,000, could be welcoming some of Europe’s most famous sides next season, and they earned that right on the final day by beating Cologne 4-1. The result capped off a fairytale season and the scoreline was of huge importance, with it keeping their goal difference ahead of Werder Bremen who also finished on 42 points.
