Volodymyr Zelensky has left the White House after a critical meeting between Donald Trump collapsed in dramatic fashion with an extraordinary shouting match in the Oval Office.
Taking to Truth Social after the tense showdown, Mr Trump accused the Ukrainian president of having “disrespected” the US and of being “not ready for peace”.
The crucial minerals deal set to be signed today between Washington and Kyiv appears to not have been finalised. It was due to be signed at the now-cancelled press conference.
After a positive start, the meeting capitulated with the US president accusing Kyiv of “gambling with World War Three” and vice president JD Vance branded Mr Zelensky as “disrespectful” for not showing enough gratitude for Washington’s support in the war effort.
A visibly irritated Mr Zelensky responded and defended his position, before Mr Trump, raising his voice, told Mr Zelensky, “you’re not in a good position” and said he was “disrespectful to the country that backed you”.
“You have to be thankful,” the president told Mr Zelensky.
It came after Mr Trump had offered glowing praise, saying he gives “tremendous credit” to Mr Zelensky and commending his “unbelievably brave” soldiers.
The pair are due to sign a critical minerals deal this afternoon, as Kyiv works to regain US backing against Russia’s invasion.
Trump: Zelensky has disrespected the US
US president Donald Trump has said Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has “disrespected the United States of America”.
His statement, posted on social media, read: “We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today.
“Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure.
“It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations.
“I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”

Mr Vance told Mr Zelensky it is “disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media”.
He then proceeded to say Mr Zelensky is on a “propaganda tour”, adding: “Do you disagree that you’ve had problems bringing people in your military, and do you think that it’s respectful to come to the Oval Office of the United States of America and attack the administration is trying to prevent the destruction of your country?”
Trump, raising his voice, told Mr Zelensky, “you’re not really in good position right now” and accused him of “gambling with WWIII”.

Russian president Vladimir Putin began the war and therefore must pay, Mr Zelensky added.
He urged Mr Trump to make “no compromises with a killer”.
But the US president revealed that he has spoken to Putin just days ago, and has reiterated that Kyiv will need to make compromises in order to reach a peace deal.
