Three-time European champions Spain will face England, searching for their first continental title, in the UEFA Euro 2024 final at the Olympiastadion (Olympic Stadium) in Berlin, Germany on Monday.
The Spain vs England UEFA Euro 2024 football final gets underway at 8:00 AM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on Monday. The match will be live-streamed and broadcast in Australia.
Spain will appear in a European final for the fifth time in their history. They have won three of the four finals they have been in, losing only to hosts France at Euro 1984.
At Euro 2024, La Roja beat France 2-1 in the semi-finals to make it to the deciding clash.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal became the youngest goal-scorer in European championships when he picked out the top corner against Les Bleus to restore parity for Spain after Randal Kolo Muani had put them ahead in the ninth minute.
Dani Olmo secured the lead for Luis de la Fuente’s side just four minutes later and Spain held on to their solitary goal lead to make it to the final.
Spain knocked out hosts Germany earlier in the quarter-finals. A goal from Mikel Merino just before the end of extra time proved to be the difference after Dani Olmo and Florian Wirtz had scored for their respective sides.
Spain also beat Georgia 4-1 in the round of 16 after a successful group stage campaign where they beat defending champions Italy along with Croatia and Albania.
England, meanwhile, had to rely on a last-minute Ollie Watkins goal to book their spot in the final of the 17th edition of the European Championships. Harry Kane’s 18th-minute penalty had cancelled out Xavi Simons’ wonderful opening strike earlier in the contest.
The Three Lions now find themselves in the final of a European Championship for the second successive edition. They lost out in the penalty shootout to Italy in the Euro 2020 finale.
England also needed late heroics from Bukayo Saka in the quarter-final against Switzerland and it was Jude Bellingham’s bicycle kick and Harry Kane’s header in added time that got them past Slovakia in the round of 16. They have secured comeback wins in all three of their knockout matches.
Like Spain, England were also unbeaten in group stages but they only won 1-0 against Serbia before being held to 1-1 and 0-0 draws with Denmark and Slovenia respectively.
Under manager Gareth Southgate, the Three Lions will be searching for their maiden European Championship title. Spain, meanwhile, are record three-time Euro winners – a distinction that they share with this edition’s hosts Germany.
