Is there a city you’ve always dreamt of upping sticks and moving to, or somewhere you find yourself booking to visit again and again? Most of us have a favourite.
But what about some more technical analysis, eh? There’s a lot to think about when it comes to the world’s top city destinations, after all, and that’s why Euromonitor International produces a big old index every year.
It compares 55 metrics across six pillars (tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety, sustainability, and economic performance), and for 2024, Paris has retained its title as the world’s top city destination.
It’s been a big year for the French capital, what with the Olympics, the Paralympics and the reopening of Notre Dame, but the city’s tourism infrastructure and policy are the two factors that helped it succeed.
In second place was Madrid – in fact, six of the top 10 spots were taken up by European cities. In third place though was Japan’s dynamic capital Tokyo, with cities such as New York and Sydney also making it into the ranking.
