Albania has been described by Rest Less as an overlooked jewel of the Mediterranean that’s beginning to carve out a name for itself with far fewer tourists and a getaway that won’t break the bank.

For years Albania’s popular neighbour Greece has been hogging the limelight but this spot is just as pretty and far more affordable.

A visit to Albania provides pristine sandy beaches, a dramatic mountainous landscape with scenic views as far as the eye can see.

Albania is found on the Southeastern Europe’s Balkan Peninsula and is a tiny country that packs a great punch thanks in part to its Adriatic and Ionian coastlines with an interior that’s crossed by the stunning Albanian Alps.

Here you will find pretty Ottoman towns, alluring azure lakes and a fascinating history that includes Roman ruins scattered throughout.

Albania is also a melting pot of cultures making it wonderfully unique thanks to its Italian, Greek and Turkish influences.

About three-fourths of Albania consists of hills and mountains with the remainder being coastal lowlands with a climate similar to many other Mediterranean countries of characteristically warm and dry summers.

Albania’s capital city, Tirana, has been described as a boisterous spot that buzzes with life with hospitable locals happy to welcome tourists.

Historical places to visit while in Albania include the Pyramid of Tirana, Castle of Gjirokastra and the National Historical Museum with Jale Beach, Gjipe Beach, Komani Lake and Butrint National Archaeological Park all a must-see too.

Albania’s melting pot of culture is evident among its tantalising dishes which include the national dish of tavë kosi – a baked meal of lamb or chicken with rice, yogurt, eggs, and a roux.

Fërgesë is another popular meal in Albania that consists mainly of tomato sauce, cottage cheese, green peppers and garlic which can be enjoyed on Albania’s many beautiful beaches.
