Italy has long been hailed as the ultimate spot for a European break thanks to the country’s historical landmarks, natural beauty and being home to some of the best foods in the world.
The country is also one of many European spots facing overtourism woes.
As such, travellers who choose to venture further afield in Italy and explore places off the beaten track are justly rewarded with this one tiny but extremely pretty island.
Best of all, this spot takes a detour from the overpopulated regions of Italy, offering an Italian getaway that ticks all the boxes minus the heaving crowds.
For these reasons, and plenty others, Ponza has been thrust into the spotlight and well deserves a spot on your next Italian adventure.
Ponza has been described as the best-kept secret in the Mediterranean.
This island may be small in size but it packs a hefty punch when it comes to things to see and do here.
The region developed as a result of a volcanic eruption, which in turn created the region’s coves, cliffs and sea stacks.
It’s not just inviting emerald and turquoise waters here, although Ponzo has plenty.
Rather, this Italian spot is home to enchanting blue caves, rich flora and fauna and an impressive amount of wildlife.
Wild mouflon, cory’s shearwater, manx shearwater, short finned squids and thresher sharks all call this spot home with Ponzo’s remote location providing the perfect sanctuary for all.
Public transport is nearly as non-existent as it gets owing to Ponzo’s exclusivity, with the region being ideal for leisurely strolls soaking up the immense Italian vibes felt at every corner.
A walk around Ponzo and you’ll be greeted with sights of brightly coloured houses, a bustling harbour with beachfront restaurants scattered throughout.
A seat at one of the region’s many eateries here offers the chance to watch the sunset on this magical spot enjoying delights such as a dish made with ziti, tomatoes, Pecorino Romano cheese and capers known as pasta Ponza or pasta all’amatriciana – a traditional dish from the Pontine Islands.
When taking a break from the endless strolls and culinary delights on offer at Ponza, there are a number of must-visit sights including exploring at The Caves of Pilate, a visit to the Pontian Botanical Garden and an adrenaline-filled trek up the highest summit above sea level at Monte Guardia.
There’s also a terrace by the lighthouse at the end of Via Molo Musco, serving up some of the most beautiful views of the region.
One review of Ponza wrote on TripAdvisor reads: “I’ve been coming to Italy for decades and can’t believe I have only discovered Ponza now. Everyone must visit.”
