Venice is cracking down on alcohol consumption in public spaces as part of its New Year’s Eve safety measures.
The Italian city has introduced stringent restrictions aimed at maintaining public order and safety during the busy holiday period, leaving tourists and locals facing hefty fines if they violate the rules.
From 7pm on December 31 to 6am on January 1, Venice has banned the carrying or consumption of alcoholic beverages, and even non-alcoholic drinks, in glass containers in public places.
This includes iconic spots like St. Mark’s Square and the narrow streets and bridges that draw millions of visitors each year.
The ban also extends to the sale of drinks in glass bottles, closed cans or capped plastic bottles – even at bars and restaurants with outdoor seating.
In addition to drink restrictions, the rule forbids carrying pepper spray during this period, citing safety concerns. Violators of these rules face fines ranging from €25 to €500 (£21 to £435).
Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro has introduced these measures to address concerns about safety and public order during one of the city’s busiest times of the year.
The restrictions aim to curb rowdy behavior, prevent accidents and reduce the strain on emergency services in a city known for its unique and fragile infrastructure.
“Ensuring the safety of residents and visitors while preserving Venice’s cultural and historical heritage is a priority,” Brugnaro said.
Venice is not alone in taking action to manage large crowds and public drinking.
Other cities across Europe and the world have introduced similar restrictions for year-end celebrations.
Cities like Amsterdam, Berlin and Barcelona have also implemented bans on fireworks, alcohol consumption in certain areas and there are access restrictions to crowded locations as they strive to strike a balance between festive cheer and public safety.
Tourists visiting Venice for New Year’s Eve are advised to familiarize themselves with the regulations to avoid unexpected fines.
While the city’s vibrant celebrations are still set to take place, visitors should be mindful of where they consume drinks and how they purchase them.
Restaurants and bars are expected to enforce the restrictions and law enforcement will patrol the streets to ensure compliance.
Travellers are encouraged to enjoy the festivities responsibly and explore other ways to experience Venice’s magic during the holidays, such as boat tours or attending organized events in designated safe areas.
