When Real Madrid and Barcelona lock horns, it usually delivers drama and aplomb. Sometimes that manifests in one-goal thrillers, but this time, the theater came in the form of an astonishingly lopsided scoreline.
Barcelona went to the Bernabeu for the first El Clasico of the 2024/25 season and stunned the Real Madrid faithful with an emphatic 4-0 victory to mark one of the most eye-popping results of the young European football season to date.
Already sittting atop the standings in La Liga coming into the match alongside their resounding 4-1 win over Bayern Munich in Champions League play midweek, Barcelona arrived in full force to put themselves in even firmer control of the domestic table with a commanding six-point lead.
Robert Lewandowski’s quickfire brace just two minutes apart early in the second half put Barcelona emphatically 2-0 up, while goals from Lamine Yamal and Raphinha down the stretch served to embarrass the hosts and put Carlo Ancelotti’s side on red alert just two months into the campaign.
The goal from Lamine Yamal was particularly special, as it broke a 78-year-old record for youngest goalscorer in El Clasico history.
On the Madrid side of things, Kylian Mbappe had himself a nightmare Clasico debut, flagged for offside an astonishing eight different times throughout the match including six in the first half alone, nullifying goals on two separate occasions.

FULLTIME: Real Madrid 0-4 Barcelona
What a statement by the visitors at the Bernabeu! Kylian Mbappe’s nightmare Clasico debut opened the door for Barcelona, and they romped through emphatically with a stunning victory that will send shockwaves through the European football landscape.
Robert Lewandowski’s two quick goals early in the second half put Real Madrid on notice, and Los Blancos were unable to conjure their trademark black magic to lift themselves back from the deficit. Instead, Lamine Yamal’s record-breaking goal removed any doubt and Raphinha finished it off late.
90+1 min: Chance, Real Madrid! It’s just not Kylian Mbappe’s day, as he’s denied yet again by Inaki Pena. To make matters worse, he’s judged to have been offside an eighth time this match, although this one seemed a bit harsh in fairness.
90th min: Having just come on, Gavi goes straight into the referee’s book for a full bear hug of Vinicius Jr. on the touchline. The referee has to intervene to keep things from boiling over, as the two have some strong words in the midst of what they attempted to disguise as a hug.
87th min: Eder Militao is booked for a frustration foul on Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona will bring Gavi on to the pitch as he replaces fellow youngster Pedri, and it’s all smiles and hugs on the Barcelona touchline. Ferland Mendy is hooked by Ancelotti in favor of Fran Garcia.
84th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! The visitors are pouring on the pain at the Bernabeu! They’re running riot now as Raphinha scores a fourth for Barcelona! Absolute defensive shambles for Real Madrid as he beast Lucas Vazquez to a long-ball over the top! It’s all too simple!
82nd min: Inaki Pena is booked for dissent after protesting for Vinicius Jr. to be booked.
78th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! LAMINE YAMAL SENDS BARCELONA INTO EUPHORIA WITH A DECISIVE THIRD GOAL! It’s a brilliant strike from a tight angle on the right, roofing it past Andriy Lunin at the near post. With it, he becomes the youngest goal scorer in El Clasico history, breaking a record held since 1947!

77th min: Eder Militao tries for an audacious effort on goal, but fails to make it threaten Inaki Pena’s net. Brahim Diaz is brought on as Carlo Ancelotti searches for a spark.
72nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! If you can believe it, Kylian Mbappe’s missed yet another opportunity in what is becoming a nightmare first El Clasico. He gets free on goal as he’s played in with a wonderful chip over the top of the Barcelona defense, but as he dribbles towards a slightly wide angle, his shot ends up straight at the goalkeeper.
69th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Jules Kounde finds himself into the referee’s book for a very late tackle on Vinicius Jr. from behind. The free-kick is sent brilliantly to the front of goal, but Jude Bellingham flubs the chance as he crashes the delivery, unable to get any kind of solid contact as the ball instead bounds harmlessly off his chest.
66th min: Chance, Barcelona! Straight down the other end from the disallowed goal, Robert Lewandowski comes up with an INCREDIBLE MISS!!!! He’s missed an absolute sitter for his hat-trick!
Lewandowski gets the ball from Lamine Yamal down the left as the cross leaves Andriy Lunin in no-man’s land, and with the goal absolutely gaping, he puts it wide from just about the penalty spot. WHAT A WHIFF! If Real Madrid come back, that will be an infamous moment!
66th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Kylian Mbappe has the blal in the net, but HE’S OFFSIDE AGAIN! Incredible scenes here at the Bernabeu, it’s his seventh infraction of the match!
64th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Kylian Mbappe is thwarted yet again as Inaki Pena makes another save! The Barcelona goalkeeper comes off his line to smother the attack clean through on goal, causing Mbappe to fire it straight at him! The Frenchman could have just rounded the goalkeeper but decided to ping it early instead!
Hansi Flick moves to protect Marc Casado, as he withdraws his booked midfielder in favor of Dani Olmo.
61st min: Kylian Mbappe tries to spark the hosts by cutting inside along the top of the penalty area and shooting with his right foot, but his effort is partially blocked by Jules Kounde and rolls harmlessly to the goalkeeper.
Luka Modric is getting set to come on, as he enters for Aurelien Tchouameni in the Real Madrid midfield.
56th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! WHOA! BARCELONA HAVE EXPLODED TO LIFE AS LEWANDOWSKI HAS ANOTHER!
This one comes off a deep cross from Alex Balde on the left, and the Polish striker finds himself in acres of space between the two Real Madrid center-backs! How on earth have Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger left him so wide open???

54th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Robert Lewandowski threads home a shot on the counter and Barcelona lead early in the second half! There are questions about the validity of this one given the offside inquiries in this game, but he’s played on by Ferland Mendy all the way on the opposite end of the pitch!
Finally, we have our opener as Robert Lewandowski scores his 16th goal of the season, the most of any player in Europe’s top five leagues!

53rd min: The second half has started somewhat like the first half, with both sides in a bit of a shell. Barcelona have held most of the possession, but Real Madrid have had a few good moves forward on the counter.
A Vinicius Jr shot is blocked away for a corner, but the delivery just evades a diving Jude Bellingham.
2nd half kickoff: The teams are back out for the second half and the game is once again under way. Barcelona will make one change as Frenkie de Jong, still not quite fit enough for 90 minutes of action, will enter in place of Fermin Lopez. It’s somewhat surprising that the Dutch international doesn’t instead enter for the booked Marc Casado who remains on the pitch under threat of a second yellow card.
HALFTIME: Real Madrid 0-0 Barcelona
Somehow, this match remains scoreless as the players head to the dressing room for the halftime break. The game was full of missed opportunities on both sides, but Real Madrid will be the ones to rue their mistakes the most.
More specifically, it’s Kylian Mbappe who is firmly in the spotlight for the wrong reasons, having been flagged for leaning offside an incredible six times that first half alone. The final one hurt the most, as it negated what appeared to be the game’s first goal just after the half-hour mark.
After that, the two sides retreated into their shells a bit, and they both seemed happy to coast into the break with the scoreline still unblemished.
8 – Real Madrid have equalled their highest number of offsides in a first half of a @LaLigaEN match since at least the 2003/04 season, with eight, as against Celta Vigo in March 2013.

43rd min: Marc Casado is the first player booked in this match for a hip check on Vinicius Jr in midfield. The Brazilian picks up some criticism himself for urging the referee to go to his pocket by making the yellow card motion, but the referee had already made his own decision.
38th min: The match has somewhat devolved since the Mbappe goal was ruled out, and both sides feel as if they’ve been shell shocked a bit.
30th min: Chance, Real Madrid! THERE’S THAT MAN KYILAN MBAPPE! The flag stays down as he’s played in down the right, and he chips Inaki Pena brilliantly for the opening goal!
BUT NO! HE IS ACTUALLY OFFSIDE! A SIXTH TIME that Mbappe has been deemed to be offside, and the goal is negated on review! Truly incredible!

23rd min: Treatment is required as Pedri is down injured after stretching for a tackle, with the Barcelona trainers looking at his ankle, but he appears ready to return to the pitch as soon as play is restarted.
22nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! HOW IS THIS GAME STILL 0-0?!?!?! Vinicius Jr. cooks two defenders on the left side, leaving Jules Kounde and Pau Cubarsi both in his dust, but he then completely flubs the finish at the near post, dragging his shot well wide, enough that it even skids behind the side netting. In truth, he had a square pass to Kylian Mbappe open but didn’t take it.
This game has been full of missed opportunities on both sides, but much moreso for Real Madrid thus far!

21st min: Raphinha has a go from 20 yards out centrally, and fires it well over the crossbar. He’s been known to score from there, but couldn’t get his body on top of the ball on the turn-and-shoot.
19th min: For a fourth time already in this match, Kylian Mbappe is flagged for offside to negate a big Real Madrid move forward. The new Madrid signing has been extremely jumpy in the first 20 minutes of his El Clasico debut. Has to calm down a bit and hold his run better.
Kylian Mbappe has been ruled offside on FOUR clear goalscoring opportunities within the first 20 minutes of ElClásico 😳

15th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Both sides are missing big chances in quick succession! Kylian Mbappe is played through by a vertical ball down the left flank from Vinicius Jr, and his low cross along the face of goal for Jude Bellingham, but as the England international reaches it with an outstretched slide, Inaki Pena makes an outrageous save!
There’s shouts for the ball having gone over the line, but Mbappe is again flagged for offside to make the decision moot. The Frenchman has got to hold his line better!
13th min: Chance, Barcelona! Lamine Yamal is now the latest to miss a big opportunity as he’s played clean through on goal, but puts his shot right at Andriy Lunin! He got past the last man Antonio Rudiger on the long ball over the top, but was hounded by the German the whole way and puts it straight at the goalkeeper!

12th min: Chance, Real Madrid! After a horrible giveaway by Pau Cubarsi who tries to collect a long boot by Andriy Lunin, Kylian Mbappe sees an opening to chip the Barcelona goalkeeper but puts it over the crossbar. It’s from miles away, just outside the center circle, but he really should have done better there!
10th min: This is a significant problem for Barcelona as Raphinha is down off the ball holding his ankle. He was tackled by Eder Militao and appears to have twisted something. That did appear to be a late challenge and probably should have been whistled as a foul.
He gets up and will continue for now, but will be worth watching over the next 10 minutes.
2nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! Kylian Mbappe is one-on-one with Inaki Pena but puts the chance wide! The ball gets stuck at his feet and as he slides to ground, his scuffed sweeping shot is put just outside of the near post! That’s a huge missed opportunity early on!
He’s deemed to be offside on the chance, which will save him some blushes, but those have to be on target in a massive fixture such as this.
I know it’s offside, but how has Mbappe failed to get his shot on target here?? 😭😭 pic.twitter.com/A40qUkXCCL

Kickoff: Soak it in, El Clasico is officially under way as the ball gets rolling at the Bernabeu! Who will immortalize themselves in the latest edition of the world’s biggest football rivalry?
15 mins to kickoff: Outside of all the narratives and storylines around this massive rivalry tilt, it all boils down to this: Barcelona could go a whopping six points clear at the top with a win, while Real Madrid could pull level on points if they finish on top. A draw helps no one, and leaves them three points adrift of one another.
Who will take the initiative in the early stages of the La Liga title race?

1 hour to kickoff: The Barcelona lineup was also released a touch earlier than usual. It isn’t necessarily a surprise, but it is notable that Fermin Lopez starts at the No. 10 while Dani Olmo sits. After a sensational start to life at Barcelona, new signing Olmo has recovered from a muscle injury that kept him out for a month, but he has yet to regain his starting spot as the in-form Lopez instead has maintained the role in a huge moment.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid are known for releasing their starting XI early every single match, so we already have a look at how they will line up in today’s Clasico. There are no surprises, as Rodrygo misses out due to injury and 38-year-old Luka Modric is rotated out for Eduardo Camavinga in midfield.
1 hour 30 mins to kick: Today, Barcelona are wearing special Coldplay-inspired jerseys. The club has a close relationship with the British band, dating back to when Pep Guardiola was in the early days of his spell in charge of the club.
Their main jersey sponsor is Spotify, so musical-related collaborations are a perfectly synergistic endeavor.

Vinicius Junior was the star turn against Dortmund with a scintillating second-half hat-trick that underlined his Ballon d’Or claims. Kylian Mbappe is set for his first appearance in this fixture. Mbappe has six goals in four career Champions League appearances against Barca.
The other place in the front three is up for grabs after Rodrygo sustained an injury late on in midweek. The versatile Federico Valverde might be pressed into action on the right wing, with his work out of possession an added bonus when it comes to protecting Lucas Vazquez at right-back.
Ancelotti will assess how Luka Modric pulls up after the evergreen midfielder produced masterful performance to help spark the Dortmund turnaround. Aurelien Tchouameni is likely to come into the engine room to provide some legs around Modric alongside Jude Bellingham.
Andriy Lunin is ready to step in between the posts once more after Thibaut Courtois suffered an adductor injury in his left leg.
Real Madrid starting XI (4-3-3, right to left): Andriy Lunin (GK) — Lucas Vazquez, Eder Militao, Antonio Rudiger, Ferland Mendy — Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Jude Bellingham — Federico Valverde, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid subs (9): F. Gonzalez (GK), Mestre (GK), F. Garcia, Vallejo, Modric, Ceballos, Guler, B. Diaz, Endrick.
Injured: Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Thibaut Courtois, Rodrygo (doubt)
Suspended: None.
Barcelona have a fairly settled starting XI and the main decision for Hansi Flick comes in attacking midfield as several of his injury-hit creators return to action.
Fermin Lopez was fantastic against Bayern, working tirelessly and setting up each of the first two goals. However, it was the Spain international’s first start of the season and star summer signing Dani Olmo feels most likely to come in from the start as Gavi and Frenkie de Jong bide their time on the bench once more.
Raphinha emulated his compatriot Vinicius with a Champions League hat-trick on Wednesday and Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal will complete a formidable front three,
Ferran Torres (hamstring), Eric Garcia, Ronaldo Araujo and Andreas Christensen remain out
Barcelona starting XI (4-2-3-1, right to left): Inaki Pena (GK) — Jules Kounde, Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Alex Balde — Marc Casado, Pedri — Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Raphinha — Robert Lewandowski.
Barcelona subs (11): Szczesny (GK), Kochen (GK), Martin, Dominguez, Fort, Olmo, de Jong, Gavi, P. Torre, Fati, Victor.
Injured: Ferran Torres, Julian Araujo, Andreas Christensen
