According to the most recent data from the Directorate General for Gambling Regulation (DGOJ), Spain’s online gambling sector is still growing, with a total income of €346.2 million for the second quarter of 2024. Compared to €312.6 million in the same quarter last year, this number represents a 10.8% increase. Still, it is 1.2% less than the €350.7 million reported in the first quarter of 2024.
In Spain, the online gambling market is still dominated by casino games, which bring in €171.7 million, or 49.6% of total revenue in the second quarter. This number represents a 2.3% increase from Q1 and a 14.6% year-over-year growth. Slots showed notable growth within the casino category, with GGR increasing by 19.5% over the previous year. With a 9.6% increase, live roulette appeared promising as well. Nevertheless, live and conventional roulette earnings saw drops in the quarter.
Sports betting revenue reached €145.5 million in Q2, a 9.1% increase from the previous year, though it decreased by 3.2% from Q1. Notably, pre-match football GGR dropped by 10.3% year-on-year, while in-play bets climbed by 5.8%. Other betting categories soared by 36.6%, but horse racing betting fell by 12.3%.
Meanwhile, online poker faced a slight decline, with revenue dipping 0.8% to €25.6 million. This represents a 10.2% decrease from Q1, despite a positive year-on-year variation rate of 6.2%. Bingo revenue rose by 1.9% to €3.6 million, although it was down 13.9% from Q1.
Marketing expenditures in Spain’s online gambling sector totaled €120.2 million, reflecting a 22.5% increase from last year and a 6.6% rise compared to Q1. This includes €62.3 million for promotions, €44.0 million for advertising, and €12.8 million for affiliate marketing.
