Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev and world No. 6 Alexander Zverev are set to join Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz on Captain Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe at this year’s Laver Cup being held at Uber Arena, Berlin from September 20-22.
Borg has vowed to take back the Cup from defending champions Team World, captained by his long-time rival, John McEnroe, and has been quick to secure three of the biggest names in tennis on his six-man roster.
“Team Europe is super motivated to win back the Cup in Berlin,” Borg declared. “With Daniil, Sascha and Carlos on my team, I think we have an excellent chance of making that happen. The guys have had an incredible start to the year, and this is a really strong first half of our lineup. I’m thrilled to have these champions in the fold for 2024.”
Both Medvedev and Zverev are Laver Cup Champions, while Alcaraz will be making his debut in Berlin.
Medvedev, who reached his third men’s final at the Australian Open this year, represented Team Europe at Laver Cup Boston in 2021, weeks after winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open. He is currently ranked No. 3 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
German-born Zverev, who lost a five-set thriller to Medvedev in the semifinals in Melbourne, has been part of the winning side each time he’s participated in Laver Cup competition. He competed in the first four editions, all won by Team Europe, in Prague (2017), Chicago (2018), Geneva (2019), and Boston (2021).
I’m so excited about returning to Laver Cup,” said Zverev. “The atmosphere is always electric and for the Laver Cup to be at home in Germany, for me in particular, is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
“Team World has won the last two Laver Cups so we are highly motivated to bring the Cup back to Europe and hopefully, with the support of the local fans, we can do it on home soil.”
Medvedev said teaming up with his rivals was a rare phenomenon in tennis and he couldn’t wait to experience the unique camaraderie fostered at Laver Cup between teammates.
For me, the most exciting thing about Laver Cup is always the team spirit, because it’s very rare that I get to play team competitions in tennis,” he said. “Having Carlos and Sascha on our team will help a lot because they are two of the best players in the world and I’m really excited to try and get Team Europe back to their winning ways.
Team World won back-to-back Laver Cup titles in London (2022) and Vancouver (2023), and McEnroe said he was impressed with Borg’s early selections.
“They want to win this one badly,” the Team World Captain said. “But guess what? So do we. This is going to be one of the biggest showdowns in tennis this year.”
Each team consists of six players, who must all compete in one singles match during the first two days, and no more than two during the three-day competition. At least four of the six players must play doubles. Each match win is worth one point on Friday, two points on Saturday, and three points on Sunday, with the first team to reach 13 points winning the Laver Cup.
Zverev said there was no other event like the Laver Cup on the tennis calendar.
“Normally we play against each other all year long, so having us come together on the same team, coaching, and helping one another is really unusual. For a change we’re all chasing the same goal together, we’re trying to win the Laver Cup and I think that alone is very special,” he said.
Named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, winner of the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1962 and 1969, the Laver Cup is played on a dramatic black court that will be constructed inside Uber Arena.
The top three-ranked players for each team earn a guaranteed invitation based on their ATP singles ranking on the Monday after Roland-Garros (June 10, 2024). The remaining three will be Captains’ picks and named any time before the start of the US Open. By naming Alcaraz, Medvedev and Zverev to his team right now, Borg is committing to use a Captain’s Pick on any or all of them if they do not qualify based on ranking.
