The latest Manchester United transfer news and gossip as Borussia Dortmund’s struggles in Germany could open the door to a sensational deal.
Manchester United’s hopes of competing in the transfer market with Europe’s top sides for potential targets this summer are hanging by the balance. United are currently 14th spot in the Premier League standings and must win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League.
If they fail to go all the way, in Europe, Ruben Amorim’s team face playing an entire campaign without European football for the first time since 2014/2015. As a big club, no European football is classed as failure, but the biggest problem rests financially.
The loss that the club would make from the lack of additional income from competing in UEFA’s elite competition will be massive. Compounded by the internal struggles within the club in the last 18 months, it would be a disaster.
United’s playing squad is expected to be improved this summer, but that job may be made near-impossible with the financial limitations placed on Amorim with no European football. Selling players to raise funds will play a big part – but problems elsewhere could present opportunities.
In Germany, Borussia Dortmund are currently 10th in the Bundesliga standings and are on course to miss out on European football. After reaching the Champions League last season, Die Borussen have embarked on a difficult campaign and, as a result, may see an unwanted overhaul of their squad this summer.
Serhou Guirassy, Nico Schlotterbeck, Gregor Kobel and Karim Adeyemi are all players who have been linked with big moves away from Dortmund in the past. A finish outside the top places in the Bundesliga could force the club to cash-in.
But it’s England U21 international Jamie Gittens who will most likely attract the most attention from the Premier League. After spells with Chelsea, Reading and Manchester City in his youth career, the 20-year-old then made a move to Dortmund in 2020.
Since making his debut in 2022, the fleet-footed winger has forced his way into Dortmund’s side and he’s now a regular in their attack. His services are already in high-demand and, according to reports in Germany, a departure this summer is widely anticipated.
Sky Germany have indicated that United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham have all registered an interest in the forward. Bayern Munich are also keen, but it’s understood a return to England is Gittens’ dream. However, it’s also claimed Dortmund want around £90million for his signature – a fee United won’t be able to afford.
If Dortmund fail to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League, though, his fee could drastically decrease and leave United with a big opportunity to bring in another talented winger.
