Lamine Yamal continues to rewrite the history books.
As Barcelona begin their Champions League campaign on Thursday against Monaco, Lamine Yamal was, as expected, inlcuded in the Hansi Flick’s starting line-up for the showdown, leading the ‘Blaugrana’ frontline from the right-hand side.
His appearence in the fixuture means he has now overtaken La Liga rival Jude Bellingham, to become the player with most UEFA Champions League appearances at the age of 17 or under. Bellingham held the record, making 10 appearances before turning 18 years old, sharing the honour alongside Youri Tielemans and Warren Zaïre-Emery. But that was until today, as Lamine Yamal makes it 11 features in the competition and sits alone to defend his record.
The Spaniard has plenty of time to add to his appearance tally, seeing as he does not turn 18 until July.
It does not end there, though, as the winger found the net against Monaco to score for the first time in the Champions League. Following his goal, Lamine Yamal is the second youngst player ever to score in the Champions League. At just 17 years and 68 days, he sits behind Barcelona teammate Ansu Fati, who was just four weeks younger when he scored his first goal in the competition.
