Piece of Magic Entertainment has acquired theatrical rights from Mercury Studios for “One to One: John & Yoko” across a broad swath of European territories, including France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The documentary from Oscar winner Kevin Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland,” “Marley”), which world premiered at Venice and recently played Sundance, offers an intimate look at 18 months of Lennon and Ono’s life in Greenwich Village during the early ’70s.
At its heart is newly restored footage of Lennon’s only full-length post-Beatles concert – the “One to One” benefit show at Madison Square Garden in August 1972. The film features remastered audio overseen by Sean Ono Lennon, the couple’s son.
The doc reconstructs the couple’s Greenwich Village apartment to paint a picture of their American experience, weaving in period TV footage spanning everything from Vietnam War coverage to “The Price is Right” and Walter Cronkite newscasts. The film traces how their protest approach evolved during this period, ultimately leading to the “One to One” concert, which was inspired by a Geraldo Rivera TV exposé.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Owen Gleiberman described it as a “rare rock doc that’s a must-see.”
“I was touched by Kevin Macdonald’s exceptional narrative which not only provides a nuanced understanding of life in America at the time but also resonates deeply with today’s world. As a John Lennon fan, it is a gift to receive such a strikingly fresh and deeply intimate perspective on this legendary couple and to experience the newly restored once-in-a-lifetime concert with incredible remastered sound. I truly believe this unique experience deserves to be seen on the big screen, and I am thrilled to be partnering with Mercury Studios to make that happen for European audiences,” said Caspar Nadaud, CEO and founder of Piece of Magic Entertainment.
“I am delighted that Piece of Magic are distributing the film across Europe. They really understand music films and this builds on a great relationship developed since we released ‘Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool’ together in 2018,” added Will White, senior VP content sales, Mercury Studios.
The Plan B/KM Films & Mercury Studios production counts Brad Pitt among the executive producers alongside Sean Ono Lennon. The film’s editing and co-direction is handled by Sam Rice-Edwards. The film was picked up for North America by Magnolia Pictures.
Connecting the past to the present, the documentary ‘We Were Here’ sparks conversations about representation, belonging, and historical memory. (Cou
