The travel expert has shared the top things to do in Crete and the best places to go on the island.
Let’s take a look in more detail.
Crete is Greece’s largest island, known for its gorgeous countryside, picture-perfect sandy beaches, ancient archaeological treasures, dreamy villages, bustling cities, and amazing cuisine. No wonder it has been among the most popular European island getaways for years.
The island consists of four breathtaking regions, all worth exploring and getting familiar with from Chania and Heraklion to Rethymno and Lasithi. Chania sits in the Minoan city of Kydonia and is a great destination for a variety of fun outdoor experiences.
It has mesmerizing beaches within quick reach of the Old Town, as well as some great hikes and many vineyards nearby that are perfect for a day trip. You don’t want to miss out on the Elafonisi pink sand beach, located on the southwest coast of Crete.
The crystal-clear waters make this a popular summer vacation spot, attracting both sunbathers and watersport enthusiasts. Another bucket-list destination on the shore of the island with a true Mediterranean charm is Crete’s capital Heraklion.
This port city has some of the best museums and archaeological attractions, and it’s much closer to the centre of the island, making the rest of Crete much more accessible from here.
Even if you’re not much into history, I suggest you stop by The Minoan Palace of Knossos, the country’s second-most visited archaeological site after the Acropolis in Athens.
Meanwhile, all wine lovers should explore the traditional Dafnes wine country just 10 miles south of the centre of Heraklion. Located between Chania and Heraklion the historic coastal district of Rethymnon is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Greece, also known for its many beautiful beaches, historic artefacts and cosmopolitan resorts.
It is a very romantic destination with timeless attractions and diverse landscapes, a sandy coastline, impressive architecture, world-class museums and archaeological sites for both a rich cultural experience and relaxation.
Lastly, if you are looking to spend your island vacation in a slightly less crowded area, Crete’s easternmost region, Lasithi, is the place to go. Its untouched natural beauty, colourful villages and remote beaches make it a perfect destination for soaking up sunshine and saltwater.
Besides, the lush Vai Palm Forest is what attracts holidaymakers the most. It is the only palm tree forest in Europe consisting of more than 5,000 trees. In combination with the golden beach, Vai forms a truly impressive landscape worth falling in love with.
