As overtourism rows continue across Europe, particularly in Spain, many people are now looking to holiday in quieter towns that aren’t as overrun with crowds.
One of Spain’s prettiest hidden gems is a city in Andalusia, an otherwise extremely popular area of the country with British tourists.
However, this currently underrated holiday destination may soon face the same anti-tourism backlash as many of Spain’s more popular tourist hotspots, as EasyJet has announced new flights there.
Almeria is a city in southeast Spain that has a rich history dating back hundreds of years and pristine sandy beaches with crystal-clear blue waters.
The budget airline has introduced new flights to the unexplored gem from both London Southend and Bristol Airport.
Located about two hours from Malaga and Alicante, this coastal city boasts one of Europe’s driest climates, with temperatures soaring above 20C even in December.
A key attraction is the 16th-century Moorish fortress perched on a hill, offering stunning views of the city for just a few euros entry fee. Another must-visit spot is the enchanting Barrio de la Chanca, where colourful cave dwellings adorn the old town.
For those seeking a sun-kissed glow, Zapillo Beach or San Miguel Beach are perfect, each lined with an array of bars, restaurants and cafes.
In 2019, Almeria was crowned Spain’s Gastronomic Capital, renowned for its typical dishes including red prawns and fresh fish.
Night owls should not miss Las Cuatro Calles, a popular neighbourhood brimming with bars and clubs. Jovellanos is another excellent choice, boasting numerous tapas bars serving up anchovies, jamon and olives.
A fantastic day trip is the Tabernas Desert, a desert film set featured in many Hollywood blockbusters from Doctor Who to Indiana Jones to Game of Thrones. There’s also Oasys Mini Hollywood, a Western theme park complete with original sets and museums.
