New Delhi: England will aim to kick off their Euro 2024 campaign with a win when they lock horns with Serbia in their opener at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Monday. Gareth Southgate’s men are one of the favourites to lift the elusive trophy this year after closely missing out on the title in the last edition in 2020.
England failed to clinch glory after going down on penalties against Italy in the summit clash in Euro 2020 and will be hoping to go the distance this time around. They are in Group C alongside the likes of Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark. Southgate’s men are the favourites to finish on top of their group and make it to the next round.
England are heading into the clash on the back of a shock 1-0 defeat against Iceland in their last warm-up fixture but will start as favourites against Serbia, who have been largely inconsistent of late. Serbia drew twice against Bulgaria in the Euro 2024 Qualifiers and have suffered upsets against the likes of Austria, Cyprus and Russia earlier this year.
Nonetheless, they have a great mix of youth and experience in their ranks and will be looking to give England a run for their money. England will be relying on the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden to step up in their opener as the trio are coming off brilliant campaigns for their respective clubs in the recently concluded season.
