The final day of the EPL season will see the championship decided, as well as a handful of teams in the mix for European football, and the final spot in the battle to avoid relegation decided.

As is tradition, all games on the final day of the EPL season will kick-off at the same time, with that being 1am (AEST) on Monday, May 20 – that’s 3pm local time on Sunday, May 19 in England.

Championship race

Manchester City and Arsenal are the two teams in contention for the championship on the final day of the season.

As it stands, Manchester City have a two-point bridge over Arsenal, so a win for them over West Ham – something they would be expected to do – will see them hold the trophy aloft.

A draw though could see them wind up tied with Arsenal, who are also expected to win against the 15th place Everton. That would tie the teams, with Arsenal already ahead on goal difference. A loss would see them drop behind Arsenal should they win.

Simply put, Arsenal must win and hope Manchester City draw or win.

European Football

The four spots guaranteed for English sides in the Champions League have already been claimed. Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa are too far ahead of the rest of the competition to be caught.

Because a Europa League group stage is guaranteed for the FA Cup winners, it could ultimately mean Manchester City (who have qualified for the Champions League and are in the FA Cup final next weekend) hand that spot back to sixth place on the league table.

There is also a guaranteed place into the Europa Conference League play-off round for either sixth or seventh place (pending on City winning the FA Cup) after Liverpool won the EFL Cup during the season, but have already qualified for the Champions League.

Tottenham are all but locked in to finish fifth on the league table with a three-point gap to Chelsea. Provided they at least draw with the bottom of the table Sheffield United, they will finish fifth and play Europa League football next year.

Chelsea then have a three-point gap to both Newcastle United and Manchester United. If they draw or win against Bournemouth, they will lock up either a Europa League or Conference play-off spot.

Should seventh spot become a battle for European qualification, then Newcastle with a big advantage in goal difference over Manchester United and playing Brentford on the final day, would be favourites to hang on.

Ironically, Manchester United are the side playing City in the FA Cup final next weekend and could yet ensure seventh place doesn’t have a European spot by winning that next weekend against and going straight into the Europa League.

Relegation

Sheffield United and Burnely are already locked in to be heading down to the EFL Championship next year.

Luton Town are likely to join them. They are currently three points behind Nottingham Forest, and while a win would enable them to tie on points, they would also need a goal differential flip of 12, meaning they’d need Forest to lose heavily against Burnley, while Luton hammered Fulham at home.

It’s not totally out of the question, but also seems highly unlikely.
