Cross-border legal research and monitoring platform Moonlit.ai today announced its successful spinout from Deloitte into an independent company and an investment from Curiosity VC.
Founded by Roderick Lucas — an expert in AI and data science with experience at Deloitte NL and academic roles at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Tilburg University — and Dirk-Jan van den Broek, a lawyer who brings over two decades of experience in the legal sector, including founding and leading ClaimShare, Moonlit is designed to make European legal research more accessible, efficient and powerful.
Developed as an internal tool within Deloitte, Moonlit offers an AI-driven legal research platform that continuously monitors legal activities across EU member states. By leveraging AI, the platform enables users to search across multiple countries and languages, with each document delivering instant translations, summaries, and insights. Deloitte becomes a launching partner.
“This investment and spinout represent a logical step forward for Moonlit,” said Roderick Lucas, co-founder and CEO.
“We’re excited to build on years of investments made by Deloitte and expand our reach as an independent entity. Our technology makes cross-border legal research more efficient, and this spin out makes it accessible for all legal professionals across Europe.”
“Despite nearly 70 per cent of national laws being influenced by EU regulations and directives, most European lawyers predominantly focus on national case law,” explained Dirk-Jan van den Broek, co-founder and CFO of Moonlit.
“In an increasingly interconnected Europe, where legal precedents from one country can significantly influence decisions in another, this tool is indispensable.”
Moonlit’s platform is already being used and trusted by leading law firms and corporate legal departments across Europe. Users report a 40 per cent reduction in research time and a 30 per cent increase in cross-border case discovery.
“We’re excited to support Moonlit in their mission to revolutionize legal research,” said Maurice Beckand Verwee, Partner at Curiosity VC.
“Their innovative approach, combining AI with legal expertise, will significantly impact how legal professionals work globally and increase transparency in the legal system.”
The investment from Curiosity VC will boost Moonlit’s growth plans and fuel enhancements in AI capabilities for even better search accuracy and insight generation, expand coverage of European jurisdictions, grow the team of legal and tech experts, and accelerate go-to-market efforts across Europe, with an initial focus on Germany and the Benelux countries.
