The Region of Crete has decided to participate in the POLIS network of European cities and regions for 2025.
Specifically, POLIS is a network of European cities and regions that have been collaborating to develop innovative technologies and policies for transport and sustainable mobility since 1989. The objectives of the network are the exchange of experiences, the transfer of knowledge, and access to collaborations for research and innovation.
Furthermore, the network of European cities and regions attempts to interconnect local governments with industry, research centers universities, and NGOs with the aim of highlighting the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of transport.
It is noted that network members generally have priority and central support for their participation in European projects, while they are allowed direct dialogue with the European institutions.
In the past, the Deputy Regional Governor for Climate Change and Sustainable Mobility, as the responsible Deputy Mayor of Heraklion, participated in the network of European cities and regions. The Deputy Regional Governor for Climate Change informed the Regional Governor of Crete about the network’s activity and proposed the Region’s inclusion in it.
In this direction, the Regional Governor first accepted the invitation for the participation of the Region of Crete in the said network, following a letter from the Secretary General of the POLIS network, Ms. Karen Vancluysen.
As stated in the reasoning of the decision, the networking of Cities and Regions both in Greece and in the European area is of major importance for the exchange of experiences, the transfer of knowledge, and access to collaborations for research and innovation.
