Spain’s Benidorm has been officially honored as the 2025 European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism. This recognition highlights the city’s commitment to some of the sustainable tourism practices and promoting eco-friendly innovation.
Benidorm’s approach to sustainable tourism is focussed on preserving its natural surroundings and enhancing the satisfaction of its visitors. The city, which spans for 38 km², has committed 61% of its land to conservation, including Sierra Gelada Natural Park and the Moralet area. These efforts protect vital ecosystems and promote biodiversity – both at the same time.
Water sustainability happens to be a top priority for Benidorm. The advanced water management system of the city has achieved an impressive 95% efficiency in water recycling, repurposing greywater for irrigation and public services. This puts Benidorm as a leader in urban water conservation.
Apart from this, the Spanish destination has also successfully transformed into a year-round destination by diversifying its tourism offerings. Instead of completely relying on traditional beach tourism, the city has expanded into health tourism, cultural tourism, and eco-tourism.
All of these aspects make Benidorm a must-visit place. In case you are planning a visit, here are a few mandatory spots.
