The Latvian airline airBaltic has become the first airline in European aviation to integrate SpaceX’s Starlink high-speed internet on its Airbus A220-300 fleet.
The Latvian airline has positioned itself as a leader in innovation within European aviation by partnering with SpaceX. This new feature will allow passengers to experience continuous internet connection from boarding to landing for free.
airBaltic has already started installing Starlink throughout its Airbus A220-300 fleet and plans to finish the entire integration by the end of 2025. With approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), this innovation brings in a new era of smooth passenger in-flight connectivity.
In celebration of this accomplishment, airBaltic organised a special flight at RIX Riga Airport that allowed members of the media and important stakeholders to receive a personal look at Starlink’s capabilities. airBaltic flight BT221 from Riga to Munich, Germany, will be the first commercial airline to offer free, high-speed Starlink internet to its passengers.
Regarding the installation, Chad Gibbs, SpaceX Vice President said:
“Customers and crew of airBaltic flights will now have access to internet the moment they step onboard their plane. This year, we intend to have the entire airBaltic fleet connected with Starlink, and we couldn’t be more excited to provide reliable internet service on tens of thousands of flights and counting all around the world.”
Starlink’s ultra-low latency and 500 Mbps speed enable passengers to do tasks that were previously impossible during a flight. Streaming, online gaming, remote working with VPN, and other high-bandwidth tasks are now easily accomplished. No additional setups or logins will be needed to connect. With over 120 countries and millions of users, Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites offer unmatched speed and dependability.
