This capital city is an underrated spot for a European break and it’s an exciting place to visit for the weekend.
Bratislava, in Slovakia, is known for its delicious food, vibrant culture and iconic buildings.
Flowing through the city, you can’t miss the River Danube which is the second largest river in Europe.
One of the most famous sights to see while you’re there is Modry Kostol which is a bright blue church.
The whimsical Art Nouveau church is just east of the old town on Bezručova Street.
It was raised in the 1910s as the chapel for the Gamča gymnasium (grammar school) but has gone on to become a symbol for Slovakia.
A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “One of the most attractive churches I have ever seen. Stunning architecture and the haunting blue colour both outside and inside.
“Was a long walk from the centre and a little difficult to find, but well worth the effort. Memorable!”
Another top place to visit is the Old Town which hosts an array of independent shops, restaurants and cafes.
You won’t get bored wandering around its streets as you’ll find a unique spot on every street corner.
While you’re in the city, you can also visit Bratislava Castle which is situated high above the city, overlooking the River Danube.
One visitor said: “Bratislava Castle sits proudly on a hill overlooking the city. The view from the top is incredible, and you can see the Danube River and beyond.
“The castle itself is beautifully restored, and the museum inside offers a great insight into the history of Slovakia. I spent a few hours exploring the grounds and learning about the country’s past.
“It wasn’t too crowded, which made it a peaceful visit. Definitely worth the climb up the hill!”
To get to Bratislava, it takes just over two hours from London and flights are affordably priced.
In February, you can visit the city for a return price of as little as £30.
The best way to explore the city is by foot as you’ll be able to see the quirks and culture of the area as you wander around.
