The Euroleague is considering options to increase the number of participants to two more clubs, “Basket News” has learned.
The elite European basketball tournament wants to preserve clubs of strategic and historical importance, like Valencia, which was relegated last season and is attractive both for spectators and in terms of marketing.
At the moment, there are only six spots available for clubs that do not have contracts (co-owners of the league) with the Euroleague. These are Monaco, Paris, Red Star, Partizan, Virtus and Alba.
The league expansion could allow for the offering of additional multi-year licenses to a larger number of participants. The new format will increase the total number of games, as well as the number of two-game weeks from seven to nine, and the schedule will clash even more with FIBA’s qualifying tournaments.
The last expansion of the league by two teams took place in the 2019/2020 season.
