ATHENS –
Greek destinations hold undiminished appeal in the major European tourism markets, according to a survey by the Institute of SETE-INSETE unveiled on Friday.
Greece’s ranking remains unchanged among the preferred destinations of the Germans and French, in third and fourth place, respectively, while in the case of the British it remains in the top five, specifically in fifth place, despite dropping two places.
According to official data from the Bank of Greece, these three countries represented 42% of total receipts from inbound tourism to Greece in 2023.
The Spanish, who have a smaller share of arrivals and receipts in Greek tourism, rank Greece seventh among preferred destinations for the next 12 months, which is logical, since the tourism product of Spain has much in common with that of Greece.
Top five destinations by market
In a breakdown by market, the top five countries that people are considering visiting in the next 12 months, are:
– For Germans: Italy (29.1%), Spain (28.5%), Greece (20.3%), Austria (18.4%) and France (17.4%). It should be noted that Italy, France and Austria border Germany and therefore benefit from easy road access.
– For the French: Spain (31.4%), Italy (21.6%), Portugal (16.6%), Greece (12.9%), UK (11.8%). It should be noted that Italy and Spain border with France and therefore benefit from easy road access.
