When it comes to planning a family holiday, with so many incredible European destinations almost on our doorstep, it can be hard to know where to go. However, according to new research by Go Compare, one destination beats France, Spain and Greece for the most family-friendly holiday opportunities.
Go Compare took the most popular holiday hotspots across Europe and analysed four key factors:
Each destination received scores in these areas which were combined to create a total “Family Score” out of 10.
Based on their research, Go Compare has named Italy as the number one family-friendly holiday destination for 2024. They explained: “Italy takes the crown as the most family-friendly destination in Europe, which might come as a surprise as it’s pitted against the likes of Spain and Portugal.
But, boasting over 40,000 hotels and 16,000 attractions suitable for families, Italy offers a wide range of accommodations and activities.”
Sassi di Matera was named as one of the highest-rated attractions to visit with kids. “It’s received over 14,000 five-star reviews, with many praising the stunning walks and history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site,” said Go Compare.
Sassi di Matera are two districts of the Italian city of Matera, Basilicata, famous for their ancient cave dwellings which have been inhabited since the Paleolithic period. They are thought to have been among the first human settlements in Italy, with evidence suggesting people have been living there since 7,000 BC.
Lonely Planet hails the destinations as feeling as though you’ve been transported back in time.
Airports in Italy have also been applauded by Go Compare for their reliability, perfect when travelling with kids.
“The airports have a decent punctuality rate of 79 percent, providing reliable travel,” said Go Compare. “Most impressively, Italy has a minimal two percent price increase during peak holiday seasons, making it a budget-friendly choice.”
