The Guam Visitors Bureau board is considering a multi-million dollar marketing and advertising deal featuring what GVB said is a top European professional football club, the Tottenham Hotspurs. The deal could be about $3 million, one official said.
The board listened to a pitch Thursday from Andrew Wood, of Singapore-based 2point, a company which, according to its website, “was created to offer clients world class sports and entertainment industry partnership opportunities and investment opportunities.”
In his presentation, Wood said Tottenham is “one of the biggest sports teams in the world…and a leading hub for business and outbound travel.”
During the discussion, GVB Board Chairman George Chiu estimated such a marketing deal could cost about $3 million.
When asked after the meeting, Board Vice Chairman Joaquin Cook said he wouldn’t quote any figure.
“There have been preliminary numbers presented but there are a lot of considerations to be made that will impact the cost, to include the assets available and the term,” he said. “It would put Guam on another level in terms of exposure in our target markets and worldwide.”
Wood quoted various statistics about the global reach of the Hotspurs brand, including its “huge broadcast reach of 189 countries.”
He said the European-based Premier League has a football fan base of more than 600 million globally, with 195 million in the Asia Pacific region.
Tottenham Hotspur ranks #18, based on Premier League standing today.
Wood said a typical Hotspurs match would draw 85.3 million engaged fans or viewers, and presented statistics that claim advertising tie-ups with the Tottenham team “can increase online tourism search traffic by 350%, and increase web traffic by 140%.”
The core objectives are to drive international tourism visitors, support Guam brand positioning and marketing initiatives or campaigns, and build advocacy with governments, travel/tourism and related businesses, among others, Wood said.
He said the current tourism partners are Malta, Dubai and Rwanda.
As part of the marketing package, there would be a television commercial featuring four Tottenham players visiting Guam.
GVB’s sports and events committee, chaired by Cook, was tasked with putting together a proposal for the full board to consider.
Chiu said they could call a special meeting in early August to consider the proposal.
