Described as an “architectural feast” the city of Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region in northern France, around 10 miles from the Belgian border. The city is renowned for its beautiful buildings and rich history, rich in Flemish architecture details and renowned art galleries.
Though firmly routed in France, it’s quicker to get a train from London to Lille than it is to travel up to Edinburgh thanks to the Eurostar.
Departing from London’s St Pancras, travellers can read Lille in an average train time of one hour and 22 minutes onboard the Eurostar, meaning it’s a great option for a weekend city break or even a day trip. Tickets with Eurostar to Lille start from as little as £35.
One of the perks of the city is its array of things to do, with St Pancras describing it as being home to a “delightful mix of history, culture, and vibrant city life.”
Tripadvisor added: “Lille is an architectural feast with strong Flemish influences from the Grand Place to the basilica of Notre Dame de la Treille to the quiet streets of row houses and gardens.”
Grand Place is one of the nicest sightseeing spots in Lille, overlooked by ancient buildings typical of the Flemish style.
Designed exclusively for commerce to satisfy the population’s need for food, the Grand Place was first built in the Middle Ages and has since been named after General de Gaulle, in tribute to the Lille-born former head of state.
The Basilica of Notre Dame de la Treille is an example of Gothic Revival architecture, with the first stone of the cathedral being laid in 1854. Perhaps one of the most picturesque parts of the city is Old Lille, made up of charming alleyways, small boutiques and pastel-toned buildings.
Art and history buffs looking to learn more may want to visit The Place of Fine Arts. The 19th-century building is home to prestigious collections of European paintings, sculptures and ceramics from the last few centuries.
For families, Lille has its own zoo which costs just €6 for an adult ticket, at the time of writing.
If you do want to spend an overnight trip in Lille, the city is home to a selection of hotels, with several scoring highly based on Tripadvisor Travellers’ reviews.
Boa Hotel BW Signature Collection, located close to the old town, won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for 2024. The hotel is commended for its modern, spacious rooms and “friendly staff”.
