In football, Turkey advanced to the UEFA European Football Championship quarterfinals by defeating Austria 2-1 in Germany last night. Turkish defender Merih Demiral netted after just 57 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest goal in the history of the European Championship knockout rounds. Demiral added his second goal in the 59th minute, while Austria’s Michael Gregoritsch scored their lone goal. Turkey will now face the Netherlands in the last eight on July 7. Earlier, the Netherlands entered the quarterfinals for the first time in 16 years after a dominant 3–0 victory over Romania last night. Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock in the first half as he opened the score. Later, Donyell Malen struck twice in quick succession to send the Dutch to their first quarterfinal in the tournament since 2008.
