Hockerill Anglo-European College will conduct a full review after a student was involved in a “very serious” sports day incident.
The Essex and Herts Air Ambulance was scrambled to the Dunmow Road secondary yesterday afternoon (Thursday, June 27) and the youngster was taken to hospital after being treated at the scene by paramedics.
At the time principal, David Woods told parents: “The incident was very serious but excellently managed by our teaching and medical staff.”
Today (Friday, June 28) he has updated families and released more details about the emergency on the day and boarding school’s playing fields.
He said: “The incident involved one student and a personal medical condition. The emergency medical treatment given at the time and then at a specialist facility enabled the student’s condition to be stabilised and a positive outcome.
“We are enormously grateful for the prompt actions of staff and students during and after the incident.
“Everyone played a part in directly or indirectly helping to manage the situation successfully. “Today we have made available to students and staff counselling support should anyone have any well-being concerns.
“We will also be conducting a full review of what happened to ensure that we are even better prepared for such an eventuality in the future.
“Thank you for your support. Incidents like we have experienced are a great test of a community and we will be stronger for it.”
The air ambulance flew to Bishop’s Stortford from North Weald, landing at around 3pm. It took off again just before 4pm and headed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
